The last Train out of Sydney

November 4, 2016

One of my Sydney Secret bucket list places, Regent Street station aka Mortuary Station.  I have been fascinated with the building since I was a child and am not embarrassed to say, was ridiculously excited to be finally able to walk through the gates.

Designed in the 1860's by architect James Barnet (who also designed the GPO, Australian Museum, Darlinghurst Court house etc) to transport the newly departed to Rockwood cemetery.

No two pillars, cherubs or gargoyles are alike which makes for a beautiful distraction when standing on the station itself. I could easily image funeral attendees staring at the intricate artwork as they awaited the fateful train.

Excited to learn that Sydney Trains/Transport for NSW will shortly commence work into restoring preciously damaged Sydney Sandstone arch pillars and will also be removing the live electric train power lines.
